SCIENTISTS and engineers specialising in chemical and process metallurgy may work in mining companies, steelworks and other smelters concerned with the winning of metals by high temperature smelting or by leaching precipitation. They may be concerned with the operation of the plant or they may be engaged in laboratories and organisations concerned with metallurgical research and process development.
Personal requirements: A well-above-average academic ability and capacity for sustained study, and an enquiring, disciplined mind.
Qualifications and training:
Professional: The universities of NSW, Newcastle and Wollongong and the NSW Institute of Technology offer degree courses. Metallurgy courses are also available through faculties of engineering at some tertiary institutions.
Various cadetships are offered by government departments and private employers and a number of unbonded scholarships and bursaries are available for students entering or completing the full-time courses. Technician: The Department of TAFE offers a number of courses.
Prospects: Job prospects fluctuate. Primary metallurgists who are willing to travel and reside in mining areas throughout Australia face sound employment prospects. Job opportunities for materials scientists are sound.
