Ford Unleashes Its New V8 Engine

FORD'S long-awaited redesign of the V8 engine has been unveiled in the USA with a mass of metallurgy, valves and camshafts that are a world away from the old pushrod thumper.

So advanced is this aluminium-block V8 that the name "Romeo" seems destined to join Cleveland and Windsor in Ford folklore.

It seems certain this new 4.6-litre V8 will find its way to Australia as a replacement for the current Mustang-based engine used in the Falcon, Fairlane and LTD. Maybe as early as 1994.

The October issue of Wheels magazine lists the Romeo engine specification as a 32-valve quad-camshaft producing 209kw and 389Nm in standard, out-of-the-box trim.

That's more than the current much-modified V8 engines produced by Holden Special Vehicles and Tickford.

The first vehicle to carry the engine will be Lincoln's new Mark VIII.
